5 Tips for Creating a Good Online Registration Form

1. Collect only the information you really need

The information you gather about your users during the registration process serves you to better plan your business and marketing efforts. Even though you may be tempted to ask dozens of questions to learn everything you could ever learn about your potential customers, I advise you to be careful with the quantity of data you’re asking for.

The thing that makes it even more tempting is the fact that most of the best online form builders allow you to add numerous fields and collect all kinds of customer data. LeadQuizzes, for example, allows you to add the following fields to your form:

  • First and last name
  • Email
  • Phone number
  • Date and time
  • Country
  • Website
  • Number
  • Checkbox & dropdown menus
  • Long and short answer fields
  • Hidden fields

As you can see, the possibilities abound. But still, it doesn’t mean you should overwhelm your users with all those fields.

Before you start creating your online registration form, you should clearly define your goals. Then, you need to think about what is the minimum information you would need from your customers to achieve those goals. Also, think about what information would be good to have but not necessary.

Based on those, you can more easily determine which fields you need to include in your form, as well as which ones should be required and which ones optional. When it comes to most online registration forms, there are some fields that are absolutely necessary. The bare minimum would be to collect your customer’s name and email address/phone number.

Depending on your specific needs, you can ask for the address, occupation, age, gender, credit card details and much more, but as already said, ask yourself whether you really need all of that info.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to collect all the information at your first contact with your new customer. Instead, use the registration form to collect the bare minimum and ask for additional details later on, using an email survey, for example.

Essential Tip #1 – Keep it short. Don’t ask too many questions. Our experience has shown that each additional step you add to an online registration form results in a slight drop in the number of completed registrations.

2. Make your online registration form easily accessible

When it comes to online registration form distribution, there’s a multitude of possibilities. LeadQuizzes forms can be embedded on your website or blog, used on dedicated landing pages, shared via email or social media, or used as popups.

To embed a LeadQuizzes form on your website, all you have to do is copy the embed code from the Share tab of your LeadQuizzes content and paste it in the location where you would like to display it on your website. Here’s a detailed guide on how to embed your piece of LeadQuizzes content on your own site. You can do it with our online registration form template too!

Such flexibility of distribution enables wider access to your online registration form. Of course, making it easier for your users to find your forms is not where your job ends. You need to make sure your forms are as easy to fill out and submit. Which leads us to the next tip.

3. Customize and personalize your registration form

A great thing about LeadQuizzes registration forms is that they are very flexible, easy to duplicate and edit, and extremely customizable. This enables you to easily adjust them for different events, websites, or services and personalize them so as to suit different customer personas and conversion goals.

You can add as many form fields as necessary to get the information you need, add multiple steps, customize the design (add background images, adjust opacity, change border shapes and colors, adjust fonts, and more), edit button CTAs, and much more.

4. Decide what happens after the user clicks the submit button

After the user clicks “submit”, they’ve done their part of the job. Your work, however, has just begun. The most versatile registration forms (such as the LeadQuizzes forms) can easily be integrated with a bunch of automation and management tools.

For example, you can set your form to send an automated email to the email address provided by the user during the registration. Or you can choose to show a personalized “thank you” page. Using the LeadQuizzes native integrations, you can integrate your form with tools such as MailChimp, Infusionsoft, and Facebook Pixel.

Also, using the LeadQuizzes reporting feature, you can track the number of people who viewed your form, started filling it out but for some reason didn’t complete it, and of course, the number of people who actually completed the registration process.
