Getting feedback is vital for any business. Whether you’re an entrepreneur or a small business owner, a manager or supervisor, or an employee, getting feedback from your clients, employees, and supervisors can significantly improve the performance of everyone involved.

This is where a 360 degree feedback survey kicks in.

As a more advanced performance review technique, 360 degree feedback enables organizations to evaluate and guide their employees on a way to mutual success and improvement.

With more and more organizations implementing this employee review system into their core operation model, some still have issues trying to make it work for their own particular needs.

That being said, we have decided to provide you with a detailed introduction to the world of 360 degree reviews. You will learn what it is, how it may benefit your organization, which questions to ask, as well as which 360 feedback tool to use.

Also, we have prepared a FREE 360 feedback template for you to use (scroll down if you just want the template).

Let’s start with the 360 degree feedback definition.

What is 360 Degree Feedback?

360 degree feedback is a review system in which an employee receives anonymous feedback from all the people they’re working closely with. It’s designed to provide you with feedback from all angles, including reviews from both managers/supervisors and colleagues/peers.

That being said, it’s not your typical employee evaluation form.

Contrary to the traditional employee performance review, where the supervisor alone assesses how well an employee is doing their job, with 360 degree feedback surveys there’s a more all-around review.

Another difference is that 360 feedback doesn’t focus solely on employee performance but on all aspects of their workplace behavior and interactions. The idea behind it is that helping employees improve their interactions and communication will eventually lead to better job performance.

Given the fact that 360 degree assessment is anonymous, it’s generally regarded as a pretty reliable way to learn more about your “blind spots” (i.e. how the way others see you differs from the way you see yourself).

That’s probably the biggest plus when it comes to 360 degree feedback surveys – they let you learn stuff about yourself that you probably wouldn’t be aware of otherwise.

Top benefits of 360 degree feedback surveys

Above, we’ve given you the 360 degree feedback definition. But the following question is even more important to us – how does 360 degree feedback help organizations and individuals?

Essentially, this type of feedback involves and affects 3 sides – the employee, the team, and the entire company. Here are some of the top benefits of 360 degree feedback to everyone involved:

To the employee

  • Indeed, it helps them better understand their own personality and workplace behavior from the perspective of people they’re working closely with.
  • Clearly, it increases self-awareness and encourages self-evaluation.
  • It reveals the needs for additional education and encourages personal development.

This tool to the team

  • Undoubtedly, it improves communication among the team members.
  • Consequently, it supports teamwork and improves working relationships.
  • Thus, it increases personal and team accountability.
  • With these factors in mind, it improves workplace communication among the team members.

It typically to the company

  • In addition, it creates better career development opportunities for employees.
  • As a result, it actively includes employees in the evaluation process.
  • Moving on, it drives training.
  • Such as, it measures how things are done rather than what is done.
  • It promotes culture change.

Keep in mind that a 360 degree feedback survey should be used as a development tool and not a performance rating system. It should be used to help the employees grow and improve and not to measure their performance so as to decide whether they deserve a promotion or a raise (or a sack).

Which 360 feedback questions to ask in your survey

A typical 360 degree feedback survey contains questions related to a wide range of workplace competencies.

Usually, the 360 feedback questions are based on a rating scale or a Likert scale.

Most 360 degree feedback questionnaires also contain a self-evaluation section that includes the same survey questions others fill out during the review.

Here are some sample questions to include in your 360 degree feedback questionnaire:

Leadership

  • Has [the employee] shown leadership qualities in the roles they performed at the organization?
  • Turning to, if yes, can you share an example of how they positively impacted the team or organization through their leadership?
  • If not, how can they improve their leadership skills?

Interpersonal Skills

  • When it comes to working in a team, which interpersonal skills has [the employee] shown?
  • Have you ever had any issues or problems working with [the empoyee]?
  • Do you have any suggestions for [the employee] on how to improve their interpersonal skills?

Problem Solving

  • From this, how effective is [the employee] at problem solving?
  • Which skills have they demonstrated in solving problems at the workplace?
  • With that in mind, which areas of problem-solving would you suggest [the employee] should improve?

Motivation

  • We can see, how motivated does [the employee] seem to be by their work-related tasks?
  • Based on this, how do they demonstrate their motivation and commitment to success in this organization?
  • Have you had any problems with [the employee]’s level of motivation?

Efficiency

  • Given that how effective is [the employee]’s work approach to accomplishing their everyday job tasks?
  • Most importantly, what are the areas of improvement that you would suggest [the employee] to work on in order to do their work more effectively?
  • It’s worth noting that, what are the areas of improvement that would help you do your work more effectively?
