Riddle me this – what’s that one marketing technique marketers are thrilled about, average users are annoyed with, but it still miraculously gets amazing results when it comes to lead generation?

I’m sure most of you didn’t need to guess twice – yes, I’m talking about popups.

There’s just no way you haven’t encountered those windows that pop out of nowhere while browsing a website. Usually, they ask you to leave your email address in exchange for something of potential value to you (such as a free ebook, webinar, newsletter, course, and so on).

Exit Intent Popup

Depending on the popup settings, a popup can appear immediately upon your arrival to the page, after a certain time delay, after you scroll a certain percentage of the page, or when you show an exit intent.

Even though each type of popups has its own pros and cons, here I’m going to pay special attention to one of the most commonly used and most effective popup solutions – the exit intent popup.

What’s an Exit Intent Popup?

The exit intent popup is your final attempt to get a visitor to perform a certain action on your web page before they leave the site. You can’t really know if they intend to return later or they’re leaving once and for all, so hey, why risk it?

In fact, chances are high you’re never again going to see a visitor once they leave your website. Data shows that more than 70% of visitors who leave your website will never return, while  98% of people will leave your website without taking any action.

The way the exit intent popup works is when visitors are browsing your website and decide to navigate away from the page (once they move their cursor close to the URL bar or the “X” in the corner), the popup will appear trying to convince them to either stay a bit longer or take certain action.

Keep in mind that, since it’s triggered on the basis of the movement of the cursor, the exit intent popup is not really a viable solution for tablets and smartphones (in most cases). If you want to use popups on mobile, you may want to consider other types of popups, such as on-load, on-click or on-scroll popup options.

Why Use An Exit Intent Popup

A great thing about popups is that they allow for a variety of uses and can be a part of multiple marketing strategies. Whether you’re looking to use popups to make your customers an offer they can’t refuse or to simply ask them to keep in touch, exit intent popups are the way to go. And here’s why:

  • You can customize the popup to suit a particular visitor or a piece of content on your website (by using advanced targeting options)
  • It’s your last chance to reach a customer before they potentially bounce forever
  • If properly set-up, exit intent popups are non-obtrusive – they don’t interfere with the user viewing your content and appear only once they have already made the decision to leave the page
  • They can be used to segment your audience (especially if used in combination with a quiz)
  • They can help you reach your marketing goals (increase conversions, generate more leads, and so on)

When to Use Exit Intent Popups

If you’re still not sure whether your business or brand can make use out of exit intent popups, here are some situations in which you should consider using them – popups can be an extremely effective tool if you’re looking to:

  • Drive email sign-ups
  • Give away a free ebook/guide/course
  • Offer a discount
  • Provide a custom offer
  • Launch a quiz/contest
  • Promote special content, exclusive to your subscribers
  • Introduce a new product, service, or feature
  • Invite visitors to an event (a webinar, seminar, conference, trade show, etc.)
  • Fight shopping cart abandonment
  • Address concerns

Exit Intent Popup + Quiz = A Winning Combination

If you’ve decided to use the exit intent popup + quiz combination to generate leads or acquire customers, there are two options when it comes to creating popups. You could either use a popup-dedicated platform (such as Poptin or HelloBar) to create a popup and then connect it to a quiz you’ve created using another, quiz-dedicated platform.

Or you could use a versatile quiz maker such as LeadQuizzes (that already has website popup functionality as one of its internal features) to create both the quiz and the popup using a single platform.

Before we introduced our own website popup feature, here at LeadQuizzes we used Hello Bar to set up all our popups. We used popups to promote our Beta version of the LeadQuizzes 3 app to marketing agencies and entrepreneurs.

The results we achieved? Using the popup + quiz combination, we managed to generate $52,223 in revenue and increase our lead capture by 37.96%. If you’d like to learn more about how to increase conversions using Hello Bar, check out this guide.

In addition to Hello Bar, an alternative solution for creating compelling website popups is Optinmonster.

Both solutions above are excellent if you’re creating a general purpose exit intent popup. If, however, you’ve specifically decided to use the popup in combination with a quiz, the best way to create it is using a quiz maker software with a popup feature.

Here’s how to do it.
